This annual festival began back in 1954 and was attended by just 34 people! Today it is one of the longest running festivals in the world and has been attended by many famous people such as Bob Hope and Brian O’Driscoll.
The festival starts with an Oyster opening competition and is contested by entrants from all over the world. It is quite a difficult thing to do, having tried it myself, so being able to do 30 in around 2.39 minutes is impressive! Think I will just stick to eating them and let someone else open them!
Thursday 23rd September is Arthur’s day, that’s Arthur Guinness of course. There are concerts taking place all over Ireland to celebrate the legacy of Irelands favourite son. The Galway concert features The Magic Numbers and Newton Faulkner.
There is more live music on Friday along with tapas and champagne. Saturday is the official parade with vintage cars, music and performers. With oyster tasting, a best dressed lady competition (worth entering with a €4,000 diamond pendant for the winner and €1,000 cash!) and a gala ball in the evening it’s a great day out!
The finale on Sunday has more music, performers and great sea food lunches in the pubs and restaurants in the Latin Quarter.
