Whenever I think of Austria, I think of Grace. Not a person, no, but rather a state of being that oozes from the classical music and its heavenly composers – Beethoven comes to mind – to gastronomical delicacies, mesmerising landscapes tucked in the Alps and oh, don’t get me started on the art…
For a weekend spent in two of Austria’s most significant cities, nothing better than Car Hire in Vienna and begin with a tour of impressive buildings, museums and other historical corners.
Since there will be no time to waste, book in advance a tour of the Spanish Riding School where you can witness the horses’ morning exercise and admire their gracious and waltzing moves, possible even on the weekend and a great start to your stay!
During the afternoon, I would suggest visiting the Museum Quarter; if the temperatures are too hot to bare outside, you can sneak into these well air-conditioned rooms and admire the work of such impressive artists as Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, both relevant figures of the Art Nouveau movement. Don’t miss out on the Secession building, which includes a beautiful, though incomplete, Klimt frieze dedicated to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.
Graz is ideally located as the next step in this Austrian itinerary: driving your car hire in Austria will only take you about 2 hours to reach the second largest city in the country. It is mostly a student town but that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable. The best thing to do after arrival would be to safely park your hire car and stroll through the streets.
The old town has been considered as a World Heritage Site and Schlossberg, the castle that sits up on the city’s hill offers great wooden paths and stunning views to admire on its upward way. Also, the Baroque-inspired Mausoleum of Emperor Ferdinand II boasts an amazing elliptical dome along with a jaw-dropping interior decor!
If still have any more time to spend, why not take the opportunity to head to Salzburg, whose streets are infused with Mozart’s music, as it stands as the birthplace of this notable composer.
You can even choose to drop off your hire car at Salzburg airport at the end of this city break… A reminder to come back, with more days to spare in this stunningly beautiful country that will leave yodelling for more!
